The main advantages of digital photography over conventional photography is the sheer convenience of it. Because of the technology involved most digital cameras incorporate many features to make image taking as simple as possible. Even the most complicated and top of the range cameras designed for the professional market include automatic modes where the camera will do virtually everything except push the button for you. These will also allow the more experienced photographer the option to take complete control of the functions. Control settings on all these cameras are accessed through a menu system similar to those on a mobile phone. With the modern digital cameras you can view your pictures immediately after taking them on their own inbuilt viewing screen. If there is a problem or you don’t like the result you can delete it and take another, if the opportunity is there. There is also no need to wait until the film is expired before you download your images from your camera. You will also not have to wait whilst the film is processed and returned to you. You can take a photo, download it and email it to a friend on the other side of the world virtually in minutes.Another of the main advantages is in the running costs. You will not have to constantly have to purchase film as the images are all retained on reusable memory. The only thing you may have to purchase is batteries, though the majority come with rechargeable batteries. It is always a good idea to carry a spare set of batteries though, in case of yours expiring at exactly the wrong time. This probably won’t happen but Murphy’s Law states that if they are going to go they will go at the most inappropriate time!Wastage is also drastically reduced through reducing the cost of not using and processing films. You only need to process the images you want. All unwanted pictures can be simply deleted, thus giving you the capacity to take more pictures and giving you the opportunity to get the shot you want. Another benefit is that you will not have to worry about airport x-ray machines fogging your film as you leave on your holiday and then find out only after you have returned home!Unless you require anything out of the ordinary, such as a great enlargement, there is no requirement for laboratory processing. With a reasonably priced printer you can print your images at home. If however you do not own or cannot use a computer, this is no real problem as you can print directly from the camera or memory card. If you are relatively computer literate you can manipulate your images using a vast range of software available on the internet. This is where the main advantage of digital photography lies as the photo you take is not necessarily the one you will finish up with. There are many free image editors available on the internet, it is merely a question of using Google to find them. Two that may be of interest are Ifanview which is quite a simple piece of software. Then there is Gimp which is somewhat more advanced. All it needs is for you to spend the time playing with them once installed. There are no doubt many instructional videos on You Tube that will give you the necessary instruction on how to use them. With a little imagination in both the taking of your images and editing of them you will perhaps generate a whole new interest in the art of photography.
